When John Williams first heard Xuefei Yang play he was so moved that he gave her his priceless Greg Smallman guitar. This exciting Chinese virtuoso makes her first visit to the Guildford Festival and will be playing music by Leo Brouwer, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Joaquin Turina and Stephen Goss's Raise the Red Lantern from her recently released CD, Si Ji. This recital is a rare UK date as Xuefei performs this season in the USA, Ireland, Denmark, Germany, Amsterdam, Japan, China, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Music Medals for Guitar
Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music
Introduced by Richard Wright
Event number: 38
University of Surrey, PATS Studio One, 2pm
Free
Music Medals is the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music's exciting new assessment scheme for instrumentalists who learn in groups at school. Conceived as an alternative pathway to the traditional Grade exams, it allows pupils' performances to be assessed on video, playing with their peers (just as they do in their weekly lessons) at a time and place of their teacher's choosing.
This is a unique opportunity to find out more about Music Medals and to hear guitar duos, trios and quartets from the five repertoire albums published by the Board played by children from the Berkshire Young Musicians Trust, Guildford High School, High Wycombe Music Centre and the Yehudi Menuhin School. Introduced by Richard Wright, the project's chief guitar consultant, this promises to be a fascinating afternoon for pupils, teachers, parents and guitar ensemble enthusiasts alike.
Recording the Guitar
Talk by John Taylor
Event number: 39
University of Surrey, PATS Studio One, 4.30pm
£5, £15 Festival Day ticket
In this talk John Taylor will play and discuss examples from a number of his guitar recordings, all of which aim to capture a 'natural' sound in suitable acoustic spaces such as churches and concert halls. He will also play excerpts from actual sessions -- to give a flavour of the pleasures, pitfalls and sheer hard work involved in recording the multiple takes that will be edited together to make a finished master - and discuss the artistic and practical implications of the fact that, for better or worse, extensive editing is now common practice.
