A thousand Algecirans congregate for the opening ceremony of the statue of Paco de Lucia

A thousand Algecirans congregated yesterday for the unveiling of the statue of Paco de Lucia in the Acera de La Marina. The musician recognised the adulation of his people by remarking "You have given me much more than bronze: your love and recognition".


Fourteen white flags with doves by Picasso in which the olive branches in their beaks were replaced by jumping notes on a stave, guarded the premises where minutes later the statue of Paco de Lucia was unveiled. A massive crowd gathered around la Acera de la Marina to attend a hommage which will be a little part of the history of this town. Paco de Lucia yesterday received the recognition of his town. The sound of Entre dos Aguas could be heard amongst the sirens and blowing of the horns of the boats. Many of the people who have been a great part of this genial musician's life congregated yeterday around him. " Of all of those who have helped to create Flamenco paco de Lucia is the greatest. No doubt at all", afirmed minutes later the flamencologist Feliz Grande whilst still celebrating the event.

In the hotel reception where the guitarist was staying and which hours later held the the hommage supper, invited guests and passers by filled the room. The largest group was made up by nervous girls waiting with pen and paper in hand for the singer Alejandro Sanz to leave through any of the exits. Certainly these youngsters were not interested in flamenco. Around seven thirty Rocio Jurado, on her way to Ceuta told Pepe de Lucia, the guitarist's brother, of her affection for Paco. "He is a pharoah of the guitar, an inexhaustible source of art, he is magnificent. His mind, agility, his hands are marvellous. As a human being he is incredible, generous and with a very strong sense of humanity. Beyond greatness".

Just before the first anniversary of the death of Antonio Sanchez, father of the guitarist, his mother Lucia Gomez, was especially moved by the words of those participanting in the unveiling of the statue dedicated to her son. In Paco's honour. Next to her, Paco's friends: Vicente Amigo, Félix Grande, Alejandro Sanz, Marifé de Triana, Los Marismeños, el bailarín Juan Grilo, Antonio Quirós, Victoriano Mera, José Luis Lara...Wild cries from the public seemed to announce the arrival of the the Algeciran guitarist. False alarm. It was in fact a dozen youngsters who were celebrating the arrival of Alejandro Sanz. Once all was calm the event started. "There was a need to materialize the recognition that Paco de Lucia received in Algeciras." These were the words that the official journalist of the city, Cristóbal Delgado, said from the stand. The Flamencologist Félix Grande recalled for those who didn't already know that Paco de Lucia is the greatest guitarist of all times. "the music that comes out of these hands is one of the most beautiful in the world." The thousand people gathered around the statue didn't stop acclaiming Paco de Lucía.The numerous photographers were the first victims of the Algecirans' anger as they wanted to be closest to the guitarist.

After the intervention of the director of the Harbour Authority, Jose Estrada, the mayor, Patricio González, described the ceremony "as a tribute to love". The first Algeciran edile closed his dissertation with the reading of a poem from the poet Lola Peche  "What a vulnerable spell, caught between the strings".

At the end, another tribute, on this occasion, a minute of silence in memory of the Algeciran guitarist Andrés Rodriguez, recently passed away. Paco de Lucia then advanced towards the stand to the first ovation of the audience: "I am not man of many words but a man of emotions. And I don't know how to translate my emotions in to words. You have given me something stonger than bronze: the love and recognition of you all". The white sheet that covered the 1500 kilos of carved bronze by Falgueras yielded to leave the colossal image of the guitarist, sat with the guitar in his lap. Even once the event was officially, Paco had to receive at the foot of his monument the congratulations of numerous Algecirans that approached him breaking the discipline that the ceremony had demanded until that moment. A group of people unexpectedly formed a corridor for Paco's entrance in the hotel. And Doña Lucia hid her eyes with a fan to hide her emotion.
