斑鸠琴，又称五弦琴，在吉他还未插电的时代，是节奏组的常客。它并非美国传统乐器，最早源自非洲，叫做”Xalam”，由西非随黑奴传入美洲，为一长劲拨弦。常用于民谣与爵士的演奏中。十九世纪后逐渐被广泛运用，经过些许的变革后，成了新奥尔良爵士乐的要角。斑鸠琴手刷着和弦，让铜管乐器尽情发挥，看起来低调，却是美国早期南方音乐不可或缺的因子。少了它，早期音乐里那股“岁月”的气味就没了。

　　现在的斑鸠琴有不少类型，例如四弦和六弦，其中跟吉他弹奏法相似的六弦琴正普及化。斑鸠琴能弹奏出不同曲风，但大部分都是弹拨或用右手弹出琶音。斑鸠琴以往在传统非裔美国人音乐和十九世纪的走唱秀出现，今日多用作弹奏乡村音乐和蓝草音乐。
